Kirra Beach is one of the popular beaches in the Coolangatta area of the Gold Coast.
It is separated from Coolangatta Beach by a headland at the eastern end of the beach called Kirra Point, where the big Sea Eagle is perched on top of.
The Kirra Beach Surf Live Saving Club is at the eastern end of the beach next to the point.
As with most of the beaches in the Coolangatta area, the beach has a grass park area along it with a good footpath, picnic tables, free BBQs and a playground.
The pathway continues along most of the coastline in this area, making it a great spot to wander along the coast, go for a long run, or ride your bike with the ocean breezes to keep you cooler.
Kirra Parkrun starts at the western end of Kirra Beach near the roundabout, running first up beside North Kirra Beach
, then back passed the start beside Kirra Beach before heading back to the finish.
Kirra Beach is known to be one of the great spots for surfing with two separate waves for riding. There seems to be disagreement of the quality of the waves.
The characteristics of the waves changed after two groynes where installed to prevent sand eroding from Coolangatta Beach.
In spite of the disagreements, there are a number of descriptions of Kirra Beach to be one of the world’s best righthand surf breaks over sand .
Kirra Reef lies about 400 metres off the beach and was a popular diving spot. It ended up being covered with sand, ruining it as a tourist activity but has uncovered at times too. If you are specifically wanting to go to Kirra Reef, it is best to find out what the current conditions are before going. Have a look here for a review of Kirra Reef and ideas on getting current information about it.
