The Big Mango is a giant mango sculpture in tribute to the successful mango industry in the area.
The sculpture is made of fibreglass, weighing around 7 tonnes and standing 10 metres high. It is built next to the visitor information centre for Bowen on the Bruce Highway, south of the Bowen township.
Big things were a popular tourist trap to attract people to a business or attraction or to highlight a particular feature of a town. The choice of a mango seems obvious as most Australians know of Bowen mangos.
This was the second big mango we came across in as many days. We came across The Big Mango Man the day before, a newer addition to Australia’s big things further north in Mutarnee, between Townsville and Ingham.
