The Hideaway Station Hotel has been operating in Tiaro since 1881, tucked in behind the railway line away from the main road through the town.
Approaching the hotel, it appears to be a typical country pub with parking outside, an old wooden verandah, and liquid treats to be found inside. The bar has decorations of old knick-knacks and photos, tidier than many country pubs.
Hanging from the ceiling is Barb’s Harley with a handbrake that appears to be quite ineffective. I’m not an expert in Harley models so it may be normal fitment. It does make me wonder who Barb is.
Similar to the Theebine Hotel we followed the brown signs to a few days earlier, when you venture deeper into the pub there is more to find behind the hotel.
Walk through the pub and you come out to a large undercover area with around 8 large picnic style tables and bench seats. The sheltered tables is an open breezy spot with shade to enjoy a drink and meal from.
Beside the shelter is a rock retaining wall with a grass area above it where there is a rustic band stand and a few things to discover while waiting for your meal to come out. A simple fort-style playground for the younger ones accompanying you.
One of our youths noticed activity on the retaining rock wall. Closer inspection found a thriving native bee hive which received continued attention for a while. European bees were representing there too, hovering and entering some roses growing on the grounds.
Once again the brown signs have led us to somewhere well worth dropping in to. I have driven through Tiaro thinking there was nowhere to stop when the hours were getting late. Now we know where to pop in to have a cool drink and a pub meal.
