Gwongorella Picnic Area is at Springbrook in the Gold Coast hinterland. As the name suggests, it is a picnic area. There are plenty of brown sign destinations with picnic facilities in the Springbrook area, Gwongorella has the most space available.
Getting a car park within the parking area was a challenge, as it is also a popular location to access views of the Purling Brook Falls and the Purling Brook Falls walk.
Purling Brook Falls I would have to say is my favourite location at Springbrook, with the walk down to the base of the falls and the Warringa Pool. Gwongorella is an Aboriginal word meaning dancing waters, and is fitting for the amazing area that it is.
If you are going to Gwongorella Picnic Area to access the Purling Falls walk, then the Settlement day-use area has a short walk to get to the same trail, and has plenty of space to get a park.
The Settlement Camp Ground can also be used for camping overnight. Gwongorella used to have camping, but is now prohibited. There are only 11 sites at The Settlement Camp Ground, and is quite popular. A number of vehicles came in during the night looking for somewhere to camp but was already full. It you are thinking of camping here it is best to book ahead.
The Gwongorella Picnic Area is well shaded. There are plenty of picnic tables around, with some under cover and lots more open but still protected from the sun from the surrounding trees. The covered tables also have BBQs for free use.
Purling Brook Falls is a short walk from the lower end of the parking area. The falls can be viewed from the either side, with a crossing over the Purling Brook.
For details about Purling Brook Falls, including the walk, see the Purling Brook Falls Lookout brown sign destination.
To get there:
From the Springbrook Mountain Visitor Centre, continue south on Springbrook Rd for 4.2km, and turn left into Forestry Rd. Gwongorella Picnic Area is 400m straight ahead at the end of Forestry Rd.
