The Main Range National Park Picnic Area is one of two brown sign destinations at Cunninghams Gap section of the Main Range National Park. The other sections are Goomburra Section , Spicers Gap , and Queen Mary Falls .
The Picnic Area is separated from the Walking Tracks at Cunninghams Gap, likely because there is too little room around the walking tracks.
A 2.5km Box Forest Track walk from the Picnic Area joins it to the parking area of the Walking Tracks. Starting from the bottom end of the picnic area, the track starts from West Gap Creek, passing through rainforest and open forest. The track is named after the brush box trees which line the creek.
The road between the Walking Tracks parking area and the Picnic Area does not have enough room to be safe to walk on, so returning by the track for 5km return is required, or arrange to be picked up at the other end.
The picnic area is fairly simple. It has open grassy space and a few picnic tables. Two picnic tables next to each other is covered, the others are in the open.
Toilets are at the top of the picnic area with a few parking spots near it. Most of the parking is at the bottom end but it is best to take a park if it is available there because the parking at the toilets is limited and the road between is one way, requiring to go back out onto the highway to re-enter at the bottom again.
To get there:
Heading west along Cunningham Hwy, after reaching the top of the Cunningham’s Gap climb, continue for 1.6km, and the entrance is on the right with a small brown sign with a symbol for a picnic area is opposite. The entrance comes up quickly, so look out for the exit with a No Entry sign shortly before it, and a right turn lane just after the exit. A larger brown sign is seen while still climbing Cunningham’s Gap 3km before the Picnic Area.
Heading east along Cunningham Hwy, a service station is passed just before the Main Range National Park and the vegetation closes in nearer to the road. From the service station, continue for another 1.8km and the entrance to the Picnic Area is on the left with a small brown sign with a symbol for a picnic area is opposite. The entrance comes up quickly and is on a left-hand bend. An overtaking lane ends shortly before the entrance. There is not a lot of room on the road so ensure vehicles behind you are aware you are slowing down to turn.
