The Rowing Course in Maclean is on the South Arm of the Clarence River, the course used by the Lower Clarence Amateur Rowing and Sculling Club.
The brown sign leads to the rowing course on the other side of the South Arm of the Clarence River from the club, along South Arm Road on Woodford Island. The road has sugar cane fields along it with a clearing south of where the club is located, although the clearing is on the opposite side of the road to the river.
The actual spot the brown sign refers to is not specific, however, the cleared land may be where it is commonly accessed.
The tidal rowing course is 2 kilometres long and has markers every 500 metres. The South Arm runs for a number of kilometres with little water traffic. If you are keen to go around Woodford Island, it is a 55 kilometre row around it.
As a tourist destination, the rowing course is not much to look at. The drive along the river and through the cane fields is nice though and is part of Tourist Route 22. During events you may spot some rowing happening while you are going along there.
The photo of the club house is not opposite where the location is on the map for this destination. There isn’t really anywhere to stop opposite the club house, so the cleared land has been used as the location. If you know if the location should be a different spot, let us know so we can update it.
To get there
From Maclean, head south along River St out of town. The road bends to the left and becomes Cameron St, then turn right into Lawrence Rd just before reaching the showgrounds, crossing the bridge over the South Arm of Clarence River. Turn left immediately after crossing the bridge into South Arm Rd and follow for 1.3km with the cleared land on the right. You will be opposite the club house 450m before that.
Heading south on the Pacific Hwy, continue south along the highway at the Yamba Rd exit and instead exit at Cameron St about 5km further on. Follow Cameron St for 1.5km and turn left after the showgrounds into Lawrence Rd, crossing the bridge over the South Arm of Clarence River. Turn left immediately after crossing the bridge into South Arm Rd and follow for 1.3km with the cleared land on the right. You will be opposite the club house 450m before that.
If you want drive from the start of NSW Tourist Drive 22, take the Yamba St exit for Maclean, about 5km north of the Cameron St exit. Turn left (west along the Clarence River) with the brown sign for Tourist Drive 22 just ahead.
