Just a short drive from Lemon Tree Flat campground is Macintyre Falls picnic area, with tables and barbecues offering an ideal place to settle down for lunch in the shade of white cypress pines. A 200-metre trail leads to Macintyre Falls lookout, with great views and birdwatching over the high, scenic gorge and rushing waterfall.
Steps and a boardwalk have been built right down to the river (600m), where a plunge pool provides a terrific swimming spot surrounded by nature. At a small adjacent beach you can also swim under the towering cliff on the Macintyre’s northern bank.
From Ashford, travel along Inverell Street in Ashford and turn onto Limestone Road. Following this road for 16km and at the intersection of Limestone Road and Sandy Creek Road turn right, and continue 3km to the entrance of Kwiambal National Park. Continue for another 4.4km to an intersection with Goberts Rd, turning left to continue to on Limestone Rd. Continue for another 3.3km to the end with parking for the MacIntyre Falls Lookout.
From Coolatai, head east on Wallangra Rd which continues as Coolatai Rd. Follow for 14.3km, then turn right into Yetman Rd. Follow Yetman Rd for 2.7km, then turn left onto Wallangra Rd. Follow Wallangra Rd for 5km, and turn left onto Sandy Creek Rd. Follow Sandy Creek Rd for 6.8km and turn left into Limestone Rd, and continue 3km to the entrance of Kwiambal National Park. Continue for another 4.4km to an intersection with Goberts Rd, turning left to continue to on Limestone Rd. Continue for another 3.3km to the end with parking for the MacIntyre Falls Lookout.
