When the Daintree Rainforest is being discussed, many think of the area north of the Daintree River and Cape Tribulation. Many also think of the Bloomfield Track, north of Cape Tribulation travelling through to Cooktown, accessible only by 4WD.
The 4WD only Bloomfield Track can range from easy to impassable, depending on the conditions. The Bloomfield Track isn’t an option for 2WD and low clearance vehicles. Even if you have a 4WD, you may not be inclined to take on offroad tracks like Bloomfield Track.
This leaves the Daintree Ferry as the main gateway north of the Daintree River and returning back again. The ferry is part of the Great Barrier Reef Tourist Drive .
The ferry can become busy, particularly during the peak season from July to September. The ferry operates from 5am until midnight daily with priority given to locals during the peak season between 9am to 4:30pm. We were there in May and there was little traffic with a partial filled ferry.
After crossing the ferry, it is about 10km to the Daintree Discovery Centre where you can find out about what you can see in the Daintree Rainforest (if not there). The first brown sign after the ferry is Alexandra Lookout , 7.5km after the ferry.
